Karjakin – Carlsen LIVE!

Magnus Carlsen already claimed the first place at Foros Aerosvit by having a 1.5 point lead before the last round. He is facing another chess prodigy of the same age – the great hope of Ukraine Sergey Karjakin. Two months ago their encounter in Baku featured a highly topical line in the Sicilian Dragon. Magnus effortlessly equalized and the game was drawn after uncompromising struggle.

In spite of the nice leading edge when first place was almost guaranteed, Magnus Carlsen played for a win against Ukrainian Andrei Volokitin who owes him for a catastrophic 0-4 score in their earlier encounters. The long and tense battle finished in a draw after 80 moves, and after Eljanov drew with Karjakin, the first place at the 2008 Aerosvit Foros was secured for Carlsen. Vassily Ivanchuk once again “shocked” his opponent with an early Qf6, and this time it paid off as he forced Loek Van Wely to resignation practically right after the opening.

Today Carlsen has the opportunity to secure the tournament win a round in advance. His task is far from easy as his opponent is a very talented young Ukrainian who excels in complicated positions with a lot of calculations. In Foros the home players are having very good performance. They were all sharing second place until yesterday, when Volokitin lost to his compatriot Eljanov.

Pavel Eljanov beat his over-aggressive compatriot Andrei Volokitin with Berlin Ruy Lopez and approached the leading Magnus Carlsen to “only” 1.5 points distance. Young Norwegian didn’t object an early draw offer from Dmitry Jakovenko who led White pieces, and is in wonderful position to win the tournament. Carlsen is also fighting for the top of the FIDE rating list.

Improved FIDE July List top ratings estimate

Like I wrote in my previous article, the Live Top List is a best effort type of initiative, and sometimes it happens that the occasional event sneaks by below my radar! After the July list preview, 4 additional events have come to my attention – 3 team events and the Chinese Individual Championships. This has added one event and some minor corrections to the following 5 players: Gashimov, Nakamura, Ni, Milov and Wang Yue. We therefore want to present an improved estimate of the top ratings in the FIDE July list.

Round Eight of Aerosvit Foros 2008

Vassily Ivanchuk played an unambitious variation of the Gruenfeld Indian defence against Alexei Shirov, and still succeeded to win by exploiting White’s kingside weaknesses. This puts 2008 Mtel Masters winner on the 2nd place tie with Karjakin and Eljanov. Magnus Carlsen was held to a draw by the last placed Alexander Onischuk, but he is still enjoying a huge lead with two points margin.
