The Indian grandmaster Viswanathan Anand defended his title of the World Chess Champion! The World Chess Championship match between Anand and Vladimir Kramnik was held from October 12 to 27, 2008, in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany. Anand was holding the title after the 2007 Mexico City tournament, while Kramnik had a right to challenge him as the winner of 2006 Elista match with Veselin Topalov.

According to our sources, Gerry Walsh, Deputy President of the European Chess Union, has been re-elected as President of the English Chess Federation. After attending the meeting, Mr. Walsh is returning to Kallithea, Greece, where he is chief arbiter for the open section of the European Club Cup.

Halkidiki is waiting to welcome 82 teams (64 men and 18 women) for the European Club Cup 2008. The European Club Cup team composition proves to be one of the strongest in the history of the event. More than 600 players will participate in the open and women section. According to the October FIDE rating list there are 23 players over 2700 ELO and 60+ players over 2600 ELO and 30+ women players over 2400.
