The U16 Italian Youth Chess Championship for girls and boys started on Monday June 29th, in Courmayeur, a beautiful mountain town in Aosta Valley. There are almost 900 participants, from 5 to 15-years old, divided in five age groups. The playing room is inside the Forum Sport Center, a grand construction suitable for all kinds of sports.

Movements started afterward, with the direct matches at the top boards.GM Vallejo Pons made three draws in a row and with a last round loss against GM Ramon could not make it to the top positions.

As it often happens in open events, the local players managed to take several scalps in round 1. GM Krasenkow could not make more than a draw against Ewoud De Groote, while GM L’Ami drew with Lennart Dek. The youngest grandmaster Anish Giri had a difficult game against Hans Gajle. “I made a blunder on move 40, otherwise I had chances,” commented Gajle. Giri was far from covinced, “Even without the blunder I was won, maybe he could have had chances for a draw.”

The opening ceremony and drawing of colors of the II Magistral Ciudad de Asunción, Copa Roggio, took place at La Pergola in Asuncion. In the presence of the representative of the Minister of Sports Justo López, Arq. Víctor Salinas, Arq. Juan Carlos Buzó, and Ing. Julio Ingolotti (President, Vice President, and General Secretary of the Paraguay Chess Federation), the director of La Pergola Mr. Oscar Franco officially opened the tournament.

Vassily Ivanchuk Routinely Concludes Bazna Kings, Takes First Place

The third Bazna Kings Tournament took place on 14-25th June in Bucharest and Bazna. Vassily Ivanchuk routinely concluded the event and with three draws in the final rounds still finished a full point ahead of second-placed Boris Gelfand. Ivanchuk’s next challenge will be Greek Chess League, starting on 3rd July in Halkidiki.

Baadur Jobava convincingly wins open tournament on his home field

Tbilisi International Open Chess Tournament was held on 15-23th June at the Nona Gaprindashvili Chess Palace. This was arguably the strongest open tournament ever to take place in Georgia, with 18 men and 13 women grandmasters from the entire Caucasus region, Ukraine and Russia. There were 208 participants in total.

10th International Festival d’échecs de Montréal

10th International Festival d’échecs de Montréal

The 10th International Festival d’échecs de Montréal is taking place from 27th August to 7th September in Montréal, Canada. The 12-players round robin tournament will be of at least 15th FIDE category. So far, seven participants are known, top rated is Étienne Bacrot from France.

European Team Chess Championship 2009

European Team Chess Championship for the year 2009 is set to take place on 21-31st October in Novi Sad, capitol of province Vojvodina, Serbia. The captains for the hosting country have already announced which players will be lined under the national flag. GM Branko Damljanović, who had retired from the national duty after the ETCC 2007, took over the management of men’s team and appointed FM Josip Ašik as his assistant.
