Turkish Chess Champions at the 86th National Anniversary of Turkish Republic

29th of October 2009 was a meaningful day for Turkish Chess. It was the 86th national anniversary of Turkish Republic which was established in 29 October 1923. Young Turkish players, winners of the international medals, and President of Turkish Chess Federation Ali Nihat Yazıcı were accepted at 14:00 at the reception given by the President of Turkish Republic Abdullah Gül.

FIDE Congress decided to divide the event between Azerbaijan and another, yet unspecified country. One group of four participants will square off in Azerbaijan, who will still have the right to delegate one nominated player. The original plan was to have the complete Candidate Matches in Baku, who were also the only bidder to come forward with a concrete proposal.

Governor of Astrakhan region Alexander Zhilkin and FIDE commercial director Geoffrey Borg discussed the possibility of hosting the final Grand prix tournament in Astrakhan, Russia, in April 2010. “Astrakhan Oblast is interested to invest in the development of chess in this region” – Mr.Zhilkin explained why he agreed to participate in this project, “I am sure that interest will be high”- he added.
