Today, I am proud to say that our city has become one of the hottest chess destinations. When I recently was at the Khanty-Mansiysk Chess Olympiad a few weeks ago, many world class players or their managers came to me to seek invitations to participate in the 2011 SPICE Cup.
The magnificent exhibition lasted 18 hours and 30 minutes after which 454 wins, 58 draws and just 11 losses (86% in total) secured the required 80% norm to make it the new official Guinness record by the representatives of the international prestigious establishment who attended and controlled the event.

Levon Aronian, the Olympic Champion with Armenia from Dresden, is the latest player to break the 2800 ELO rating barrier. He achieved the prestigious 2800+ status after round 4 of the European Club Cup in Plovdiv.

The opening ceremony of the European Club Cup 2010 was held Saturday evening at the Bendida Hall of Novotel Plovdiv. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, ECU President Silvio Danailov, the President of the BCF Stefan Sergiev, and Deputy Mayor of the City of Plovdiv Georgi Titiukov greeted the players and guests.
