Morozevich won four games and lost only against the host GM Alexei Shirov. Great success for the young Ukrainian GM Igor Kovalenko who shared the second place with 4.5 points.

The preliminary stage of the Vladimir Petrov Memorial was played on Thursday and Friday at the Jurmala City museum in Latvia.The tournament was played in two groups based on rating and over 9 rounds of Swiss system with the time control of 15 minutes plus 6 seconds per move.
Top four finishers from the A preliminary tournament, namely Daniel Fridman, Ildar Khairullin, Michal Krasenkow and Igor Kovalenko, qualified to continue the competition in the main Final tournament. 58 players competed.
The B preliminary tournament had 26 players. Laimonas Kudzma and Edvins Griezne shared the first place with 8 points each.
The aim of the tournament was to pay the tribute to one of the brightest representatives of Latvian Chess ever who tragically died in Soviet camps during the Second World War.
The tournament was organized by the Latvian Chess Federation and Grandmaster Alexei Shirov, and was held in Jurmala, Latvia, from Feb. 15 (arrival) to Feb. 20 (departure), 2012.
