All news about Baku Grand Prix

Wang Yue used fashionable Bg5 variation to outplay Peter Svidler in his favorite Gruenfeld Indian defence. Black tried to reduce the positional squeeze by sacrificing an exchange, but Chinese had no mercy and converted the advantage into win.

Etienne Bacrot, who has been ultra solid so far, committed the worst blunder of this tournament by putting the Queen en price on attacked square. My friend joked that Ernesto Inarkiev covered the culprit Knight with his hand, so Bacrot didn’t see it. Frenchmen actually had almost winning position in the opening, but then dropped the advantage with 17. d4 when 17. Nc7 was the right move.

Morelia Linares round 11 – results and replayable games

Alexei Shirov is expert for the Gruenfeld Indian defence and also unpleasant opponent for Veselin Topalov, but the Bulgarian managed to impose him another defeat in the same variation. Earlier he won with Sokolsky Attack at the 2007 Corus. Thanks to Magnus Carlsen’s loss, when he played somehow carelessly against the last-placed Peter Leko, Topalov and Aronian have evened with him on the second place tie. Radjabov-Anand was uneventful draw where black used the cleaning line to force quick exchanges against the rare setup in Caro-Kann. Completely on the opposite, Aronian-Ivanchuk deviated from the known theory already on 8th move and turned into wild chase as the pieces were disappearing from the queenside. Aronian realised he could only end up worse, and proceeded to trade the queens which killed all the tension and draw was imminent.
