All news about Baku Grand Prix

Vugar Gashimov defeated the then leading Alexander Grischuk and pushed him down in the standing to the 3rd place tie. Already choice of the opening was probably a decisive mistake. Grischuk repeated the suspicious sub-variation in Ruy Lopez Deferred Steinitz that he already used in the game against Svidler. Gashimov said that he carefully prepared for this line and came up with the strong novelty 12. Qd3, “My analysis proved to be effective” – he added.

Wang Yue was very lucky to escape the defeat, because Ernesto Inarkiev held extra pawn through most of the game. The Chinese is now tied first with Gashimov, both heading into the last round with half point ahead of others. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is not only proficient attacker, he can play some endgames as well! His good friend Etienne Bacrot learned that lesson today.

Adams thinking Carlsen press square

Michael Adams and Magnus Carlsen

It appears that Michael Adams can’t play black pieces with Magnus Carlsen, having suffered today his third loss against young Norwegian. The opening was fine for Adams, he even held a certain edge in the early middlegame, but then Carlsen’s animated minor pieces forced him to make concessions one after another. It is possible that the late endgame with one pair of pawns could have been saved, but black made another mistake and game was immediately over.

Teimour Radjabov lost third game with white pieces, this time David Navara was at the right place and in the right time to sign his first victory in Baku. Radjabov admitted “that he just played terribly, even if the position ended in equal at some later stage”. He then explained – “I very much wanted to win, and so I made one wrong move which destroyed all my earlier efforts”.

Peter Svidler blasted Gata Kamsky off the board after American run into horrible time trouble. Prior to that, the position deemed all even. Ivan Cheparinov and Sergey Karjakin have split the point.

Carlsen wins another against Topalov

Morelia Linares round 12 – results and replayable games

Marshall Attack and Sveshnikov Sicilian have survived another test. Carlsen escaped from weaker position to win another game against Topalov. Deja vu? :) Shirov persistently followed ‘his line’ against the Marshall Attack, where Leko held a draw with black the other day, and managed to push the pawn all the way to f7. Cute mate threat from Aronian forced him to underpromote and we had a pleasure to follow an interesting unbalanced ending, where black was able to reach a draw. Ivanchuk-Radjabov and Anand-Leko were also drawn.

Round 12 results:

Vishy Anand – Peter Leko draw

Magnus Carlsen – Veselin Topalov 1-0
