David Navara and Kristýna Havlíková are Czech Chess Champions

The 2017 Czech Chess Championships for men and women were held from 29th April to 7th May at the Culture Palace in Ostrava.

Both events were incorporated into single open section with 58 participants, organized by Ostrava Chess z.s.

Top seed David Navara took a clear first place with 7,5/9 points to claim his eighth national title. But the road to victory was dramatic. Jiří Štoček beat Navara in the fourth round and continued to lead until the last round when he lost to Zbyněk Hráček. Eventually Hráček and Štoček shared the second place with 6,5 points each.

“It was a very challenging tournament for me. After losing in the fourth round I had to take risks. Štoček played a great tournament, before losing in the last round, “Navara stated.

Women’s ranking was calculated separately. Three players finished on 4,5/9 points each, but according to the tiebreak Kristýna Havlíková took the winner’s trophy, Karolina Olšarová took the silver, while Olga Sikorová finished third.
