The opening ceremony of the Chess Grand Prix in Baku took place this Sunday. There were many official guests and the procedure itself was quite interesting. However, here are the most important details that everyone has been expecting. Games start daily at 15:00, except for the last day when the round starts from 14:00 local time. Playing days are 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 April and 2, 3, 4, 5 May. The rest days are April 26 – May 1.

The procedure of drawing lots was original one, players approached the table in alphabetical order and picked a backgammon board with a number on it. Ernesto Inarkiev, who entered the Grand Prix series as President’s nomeenee, took a number one and is scheduled to play white against Gata Kamsky in the first round.
FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced that International Chess Federation will subsidize the costs of construction of Baku Chess Palace, which is projected to host the Academy and Museum. There was also lots of talk about Heydar Aliyev, former Azerbaijan president, and Ilyumzhinov even stated – “In my opinion, if it were not for Aliyev, the chess world probably would have never seen Garry Kasparov as World Champion”.

Currently the preparations for the ceremony in the “Teatro de la Ciudad de Mexico” are suspended due to unknown reasons. The opening will take place in the playing hall in “Sheraton del Centro Hotel Historico”.
Update 17:45
Yesterday the main playing hall at the Hotel Centro Historico was in construction works. We cannot be sure of the state of the hall today. It is possible another hall to host the opening.
