Hello again! After the rest day we offer you the battle between the hungry for a victory Gata Kamsky and the current leader Mamedyarov.
1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 The Pirc Defense surprised Gata Kamsky.
4. Nf3 Bg7 5. h3 O-O 6. Be3 c6 7. Qd2 Kamsky chooses a solid line. Another possibility is to limit the counter play on the Queen side with 7.a4.
7... b5 8. Bd3 Nbd7 9. O-O He keeps on playing "waiting" moves. More popular continuations are 9.a4 b4 10.Ne2, 9.Bh6 or 9.e5 starting direct action.
9... Qc7 10. Ne2 The idea with "a4" does not look that good in this moment : 10.a4 b4 11.Ne2 c5 12.c3 c4 and after b4-b3 and e7-e5 the white rook and bishop will be isolated.
10... c5 11. c3 10...c5 is a new move in that position, but the results for black in the main variation after 10...e5 are not positive.
11... e5 12. Ng3 After 12...Bb7 the position looks like Ruy Lopez
12... c4 13. Bc2 Re8 It looks like this is the moment for 14.a4 in order to break apart the pawns on the Queen side.
14. a4 bxa4 15. Bxa4 exd4 16. Nxd4 a6 17. Bh6 Bh8 18. Ndf5 The strategy of Kamsky is to play solid moves and not let Mamedyarov show his tactical abilities. This is working up to now. That is why Black is looking for complication of the position and plays risky moves.
18... Re6 19. Rfd1 Nc5 20. Nxd6 After 15...ed4? the game does not go well for Mamedyarov. After 20...Bb7 it is interesting to see 21.Nb7 Qb7 22.e5
20... Bb7 21. Nxb7 Qxb7 22.Qd8 Rd8 23.Rd8 Re8 24.Re8 Bf6 25.Bc6 forces an endgame where White has a pawn more.
22. f3 Nd3 Kamsky keeps on following the same style: positional play without complications.
23. b3 Bg7 24. Be3 follows White's ideas as they consolidate their advantage.
24. Bxg7 Kxg7 25. bxc4 Nb2 26. Rdb1 Qa7+ 27. Kh1 Nxc4 28. Qg5 With technical moves Kamsky achieved a winning position.
28... Rc8 29. Nf5+ Kh8 30. Nd4 Rb6 31. Rxb6 Qxb6 32. Bb3 Rc5 33. Qh6 33.e5 Re5 34.Qh6 was very unpleasant for Black.
33... Kg8 34. Re1 The idea is 35.Bc4 and e4-e5-e6
34... Rh5 35. Qf4 Rc5 36. e5 Nh5 37. Qh4 Kamsky constantly increases the pressure and does not give chances for a counter attack.
37... Nxe5 38. f4 Rxc3 39. fxe5 Rxb3 40. e6 fxe6 41. Nxb3 Qxb3 42. Qd8+ Kg7 43. Qe7+ Kh6 44. Qf8+ The White attack finds a nice mating finish 44...Kg5 45.Re5 Kg4 46.Re4 Kg5 47.h4 Strong game for Kamsky and first victory in the tournament for him.
