Gelfand joining Anand in the lead

Two oldest players on the top with 4.0 points each

6th round of the World Chess Championship has established two oldest players on the top with 4.0 points each. Kramnik and Grischuk are closely following on 3.5, while Levon Aronian, the third suspect for winning the title, is struggling on 2.5.

Peter Leko probably devoted most of his preparation to the Marshall attack and Petroff defence, allowing Vishy Anand to surprise him with Arhangelsk/Moeller in Ruy Lopez. We bravely claim that Leko wasn't aware of Beccera Rivero-Friedel from the last year US chess league or he wouldn't have played inferior novelty 17. Rfe1. Beccera's 17. Nc3 was much more to the point, in our game Anand equalised without problems and draw was agreed already on 21st move. Leko is still waiting for his first win in Mexico.

Boris Gefland 1

Boris Gelfand

Boris Gelfand firmly increased the slight advantage after Morozevich's exchange sacrifice and already after 27. Rg4 it was clear that black was in big trouble. Morozevich still tried to do something with the passed pawn on the queenside, but Gelfand's h-pawn and rook proved to be much more dangerous. With this win, Gelfand moves to the 1st place tie, which is surprise for many observers, but not for us. This summer, we spoke to one of his seconds GM Michael Roiz during Gorenje 2007, and he assured us that Gelfand will have superb preparation. Kudos to GMs Khuzman and Roiz for the excellent work.

Alexander Grischuk was trying hard to win against Peter Svidler, and just when he gained significant advantage after the time control, he suddenly proposed draw with moves repetition. If Grischuk improves his time management, we could have another "unexpected" contender for the championship. Levon Aronian - Vladimir Kramnik was bloodless draw.
