Anand regains the lead

Anand scored the only 7th round win against Grischuk

Vishy Anand brought life into dry Anti-Marshall and outplayed Alexander Grischuk in his trademarked fluent style. In the words of our commentator Kalin Karakehayov: "An incredible game by Anand! In a seemingly harmless position he managed by a series of strong moves starting with 31.h4!, to break through the kingside to the weak d6 pawn... After he got two strong connected pawns, he made a very original and beautiful sacrifice of the e4 pawn with 41.d6!! in order to push the d-pawn and activate his pieces. Only a few moves after this the game was over." With this win, Anand is taking the sole lead, half point ahead of Boris Gelfand.

Anand and Grischuk

If ultra-solid Petroff is his answer to 1.e4, Gelfand didn't hesitate to run into ultra-sharp Botvinnik Semi-Slav against reigning champion Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik's first round encounter with Peter Svidler probably supplied hints here and there. Nevertheless, Kramnik was first to produce the novelty with 13. Qc1, deviating from the usual move order Be5 and only then Qc1. In a very dynamic position, Boris kept the king in the center and advanced pawns on both flanks. His avant-garde play was real pleasure for the viewers and inventive moves like 25...a5!, 28...Rd6, 31...h3!, finally 33...0-0-0!! helped him ensuring the draw.

Alexander Morozevich - Peter Leko was drawn after the complex struggle in Scotch opening and Peter Svidler had to agree on tie after the Exchange Ruy Lopez brought him nothing against Levon Aronian.
