Anand scored the only 7th round win against Grischuk
Vishy Anand brought life into dry Anti-Marshall and outplayed Alexander Grischuk in his trademarked fluent style. In the words of our commentator Kalin Karakehayov: “An incredible game by Anand! In a seemingly harmless position he managed by a series of strong moves starting with 31.h4!, to break through the kingside to the weak d6 pawn… After he got two strong connected pawns, he made a very original and beautiful sacrifice of the e4 pawn with 41.d6!! in order to push the d-pawn and activate his pieces. Only a few moves after this the game was over.” With this win, Anand is taking the sole lead, half point ahead of Boris Gelfand.
Anand and Grischuk
If ultra-solid Petroff is his answer to 1.e4, Gelfand didn’t hesitate to run into ultra-sharp Botvinnik Semi-Slav against reigning champion Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik’s first round encounter with Peter Svidler probably supplied hints here and there. Nevertheless, Kramnik was first to produce the novelty with 13. Qc1, deviating from the usual move order Be5 and only then Qc1. In a very dynamic position, Boris kept the king in the center and advanced pawns on both flanks. His avant-garde play was real pleasure for the viewers and inventive moves like 25…a5!, 28…Rd6, 31…h3!, finally 33…0-0-0!! helped him ensuring the draw.
Kramnik and Gelfand
Alexander Morozevich – Peter Leko was drawn after the complex struggle in Scotch opening and Peter Svidler had to agree on tie after the Exchange Ruy Lopez brought him nothing against Levon Aronian.

VSK Gorenje and Beograd Beopublikum continue the race. Partizan surprisingly 4th
Partizan continues surprisingly strong as they beat favored Novosadski SK today with a clean 4-2. Underrated but experienced Grandmasters held their lines, while Greek GM Stelios Halkias and young Montenegrin IM Anto Rmus were the executors. VSK Gorenje is back on the winning track, SK ZTP fell 3.5-2.5. Legend Dragoljub Velimirovic signed his 4th win in a beautifully played queens endgame against GM Goran Todorovic. Download TWIC files next week and examine it closely.
Beograd Beopublikum is breathing on Gorenje’s neck as they whooped Agronom 4.5-1.5. Arkadij Naiditsch was pressing too hard with Black against unambitious Dragan Kosic, but this loss was compensated by his team-mates’ 4 wins. Radnicki defeated Bora Kostic, the only decided game was between GM Barlov and IM Benkovic. Last placed Rad chopped one point off of BSK Gambit.

Each round in Women’s League brings at least one surprise. The heroine was Snezana Zecevic who defeated so-far effective WFM Ljilja Drljevic for Zlatar’s 2-2 vs BAS. Srem suffered disastrous 0-4 defeat at the hands of experienced Radnicki Rudovci. Spartak and Rad scored easy wins and the leading pack of four teams continues the chase for the title.
