Grandmaster Wesley So from Philippines, student at the Webster University in Saint Louis, captured the gold medal at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan after edging the competition on tie-break.
After nine rounds of play in the Men’s section of chess competition, as many as nine players shared the first place with 6,5 points each.
After breaking the tie with additional criteria, Wesley So won the gold medal, Zaven Andriasian from Armenia took the silver, while the previous winner Li Chao B from China was awarded with bronze.
It was a close call as the top three players had the same summary of the first Buchholz criteria. Li Chao was declared third after counting the second Buchholz, but So and Andriasian again sported the same numbers.
Only on the third additional criteria, rating performance, So distinguished himself as the winner with 2714 Rp, while the Armenian remained second with 2704 Rp.
Update: Susan Polgar informs that “In spite of coming out on top in the 3rd tiebreak in Kazan, Webster U GM Wesley So had to beat former World Junior Champion GM Zaven Adriasian in the Armageddon playoff to win the World University Championship title.”
Susan Polgar also added for Chessdom: “This was the shocking part. Here are the rules: http://kazan2013.ru/assets/regulations_en-747b4432fad33e0d21fb5f826ebdd3e1.pdf
There was no mentioning of any Armageddon. Wesley should have won based on the 3rd tiebreaks. But he was asked to play in the Armageddon.
Tournament director Alexander Tkachiev told Wesley that the playoff game was needed. He did what he was told.”
