Two and a half months before the start of the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, first ever to be held in India, already 100 countries registered for the competition. 101 teams are registered in the Open section and 86 teams confirmed participation in the Women’s section. (scroll down for the full story)
The Director of the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, Bharat Singh Chauhan, commented on the first milestone achieved by the All India Chess Federation: “Registration of 187 teams from 100 countries in such short span of time is testimony to the excitement of chess players around the globe for the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai. A number of countries revealed the compositions of their teams, such as: Spain, Germany, India, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Kenya… Indian teams already started preparations for the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 with Boris Gelfand and former World Champion Anand Viswanathan. Being asked about the expectations, Gelfand added that he strongly believes that Indian teams can go the distance in the competition: “The Indian squad has a good mix of youth and experience. Along with teams such as the United States and China, India will be among the favourites for a podium finish. It will all boil down to how one holds his or her nerve on that given day“.
