144-square-meter Chess Board arrived in Stavanger

The MegaChess set from RMD Recuperacion Materiales Diversos built from 800 recycled tires has just arrived in Stavanger, Norway! The chess pieces are made from recycled tires, weighing up to 220kg, and sit on the 144 squared meter chess board – the largest chess board in the World! The King piece is 180cm tall, being about the same height as the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. The chess pieces will have small wheels beneath to be easily moved through the squares.

The MegaChess set will be open for the public to play this summer and it’s expected to attract many chess enthusiasts during the Norway Chess 2022 – taking place from May 31st to June 10th in Stavanger.

The World’s biggest chess set:
The board is 11.5 meters x 11.5 meters and has a total area of ​​144 square meters. The largest piece, the king, is 180 centimeters tall and weighs 220 kilograms. The pieces are a copy of the pieces that Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer played with during the legendary World Cup match in 1972 – only in a much larger format. About 800 recycled car tires have been used to make the pieces.
