15th European Senior Chess Championship kicked off in Eretria, Greece

The 15th European Senior Chess Championships for Men and Women have started in Eretria, Greece, with the participation of 87 players from 27 countries and a prize fund of 8.000 euros for the winners.

The event is held under excellent playing conditions in the conference center of the 4-star “Eretria Village” Hotel, which is near the ancient city of Eretria.

The tournament format is 9-round Swiss with the time control 40 moves in 90 minutes, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game+ 30 seconds increment per move, starting from move one.

Top names playing include famous GMs such as John Nunn (ENG), Zurab Sturua (GEO), Nona Gaprindashvili (GEO), Keith Arkell (ENG), Evgeny Vasiukov (RUS), Viktor Kupreichik (BLR) and many others.

The first 3 winners from each category (men and women 50+ and 65+) qualify with personal rights, including free board and lodging in single rooms, to the FIDE World Senior Championships 2016 in Marianske Lazne, Czech Republic.
