After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations but alluding to a possible cheating case. GM Alejandro Ramirez was one of the commentators of the Sinquefield Cup 2022 and now shared his insights on Carlsen’s withdrawal from the event. Ramirez joined Tania Sachdev for the live broadcast of the Julius Baer Generation Cup (which includes both Niemann and Carlsen in the field) and told how Carlsen’s withdrawal looked from his perspective. “I came an hour before the start (of the game) in the studio for a rehearsal, and everybody was there. The entire staff of the Saint Louis Chess Club was there! And I am like, okay this is not normal, what is going on? Am I late? No, I am not late. And they told us Magnus wasn’t going to show up for the game. We knew that he wasn’t gonna show up, but they didn’t give us a reason. Magnus didn’t give an official reason. Because of everything that happened afterwards you can kind of guess the reason“, said Ramirez at the beginning of the broadcast. He commented more on the whole Niemann – Carlsen case adding that he doesn’t think Hans Niemann cheated in the Sinquefield Cup 2022: “I don’t think Hans cheated in the Sinquefield Cup”.
