Candidates Chess 2016 – Pairings

Candidates Chess 2016 MoscowFIDE and Agon, its commercial partner, are organizing the Candidates Chess Tournament 2016 that will be held in Moscow from March 10 to 30, 2016. Round 1 of the competition is going to take place March 11th and the pairings are already known.

The first round will see an all Russian and all American pairings, namely the matches Sergey Karjakin – Peter Svidler and Hikaru Nakamura – Fabiano Caruana. The other two encounters of the day will be Anish Giri – Levon Aronian and a repetition of the 2010 World Chess Championship Viswanathan Anand – Veselin Topalov.

The pairings have been made today in FIDE office in Athens in the presence of the top chess arbiter Mr. Nikolopoulos and the FIDE Executive Director Mr. Freeman, following the Rules and Regulations for the Candidates Tournament of the FIDE World Championship cycle 2014-2016. More about the Candidates 2016

The Candidates Tournament is a chess tournament organized by FIDE since 1950, as a final tournament to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship. The winner of the Candidates earns the right to a match for the World Championship against the reigning World Champion, currently Magnus Carlsen. The match is supposed to be held in the United States.

Tashir Group, a large real estate developer in Russia, is one of the principal sponsors. The company is run by Samvel Karapetyan, an Armenian-born businessman whose net worth is about $4.8 billion according to Forbes magazine.
