GM Fabiano Caruana is the 2022 U.S. Champion, clinching his second title with a draw in the 13th and final round of the tournament against GM Levon Aronian. Fabiano celebrated his second US Champion title with Cristian Chirila, Alejandro Ramirez, Maurice Ashley and Tatev Abrahamyan in the C-squared podcast.
Caruana explained the US Chess Championship is a very important tournament for him, and that one of his main goals every year is to clinch this title: “Every year it’s one of my main goals to win this tournament“. Speaking about a unique situation that marked the 12th round of the US Championship as Samuel Sevian took Hans Niemann’s King from the board and broke its top cross off, Fabiano said that Sam lost his mind for a second: “I think he [Sam] lost his mind for a second when he did it. Because he did it on the opponent’s time, which is very strange. But the King was loose, apparently, players had noticed that before. I didn’t notice it, but the King had a loose top and it bothered him [Samuel] and he just couldn’t ignore it anymore“. See the complete podcast below
