This year an International Open tournament is taking place along the Chess Grand Slam Final in Bilbao. 104 players compete in the 8-round Swiss and the games take place from 6th to 11th October at the Alhóndiga de Bilbao. Plaza Arriquibar, 4. Bilbao.
GM Gomez Esteban boasted a perfect score in the first five rounds but then he lost against GM Oleg Korneev and allowed a group of players to catch up in the joint lead.
With a convenient schedule and a couple of bye rounds, GM Korneev is competing in two parallel tournaments – Bilbao Open and Oliver Gonzalez Memorial in Madrid.
