Chess Club “Rijeka” has once again confirmed its organizational skills by successfully completing the 7th Mediterranean Men and Women Chess Championships, with the participation of 64 chess players from 19 countries. The winner of this tournament was the Egypt grandmaster Ahmed Adly, while in the women’s competition the winner was Anna Maria Botsari from Greece. Damir Levačić, president of the Mediterranean Chess Association, paid tribute to the organizers of the Championship and also pointed out that Rijeka is a true cosmopolitan city where chess slogan “Genus una sumus” has really proven to be true.

However, this is just one of the preliminary tournaments that announce next year’s organization of the 11th European individual men and women’s chess championship. The Championship will be held from 5th to 19th of March 2010 in Rijeka, in the new sports hall “Center Zamet”.

Organizers are expecting more participants than any European Championship up to now, so they prepared the highest prize fund ever and the best accommodation conditions. The total prize fund for men is 150.000,00 EUR, and for women 75,000.00 EUR. The accommodation is provided in Opatija, the oldest Croatian tourist resort, famous for its mild climate, large botanic garden and Central European architecture, unique on the Mediterranean. The accommodation is also provided in the host city of Rijeka, in hostel “Rijeka”, beautiful villa from the 19th century, which is converted into a charming and modern high standard hostel.

RIJEKA

The city of Rijeka is the most important Croatian port and the third largest city in Croatia. City and its surroundings has more than 190,000 inhabitants. Back to 19th century, due to its ideal geographical location and depth of the sea in the Kvarner Bay, Rijeka developed into one of the largest Central European ports and a powerful industrial center. Rijeka was also significant as one of the most important financial centers in the former Yugoslavia.

The beginning of the nineties leads to the collapse of industry and rapid reduction of the port traffic, so in the new millennium Rijeka turns to the development of urban tourism and service sectors.

Rijeka has always been a true sports city which is confirmed by numerous successes of its athletes. www.rijeka.hr / www.tz-rijeka.hr
