European Team Chess Championship 2025 – information, schedule and participants

The European Team Chess Championship 2025 will be held in Batumi, Georgia, from 4 to 15 October 2025. Organized by the European Chess Union and the Georgian Chess Federation, the event will bring together national teams from across Europe to compete in both the Open and Women’s sections. Each team consists of four players plus one reserve, and the tournament will be played over nine rounds in a Swiss system. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one.

In the open section of the European Team Chess Championship 2025, the reigning champions Serbia come with zero changes in the team, looking to repeat their performance from Budva. Their main opponents are the top seeded team of Germany, as well as the teams of The Netherlands, Hungary, Azerbaijan, and England. See the full participants list here

In the women section top seeded are the local team of Georgia, followed by Poland and Ukraine. The defending champions are fifth seeded and come with a single change in the team. See the full women participants list here

Rounds will take place daily, with one free day scheduled for meetings and rest, though the exact day-by-day round allocation has not yet been finalized. The ECU General Assembly and the federation’s 40th anniversary gala will take place on 11 October 2025 during the championship. The final rounds are expected to finish by 13 or 14 October, with 15 October designated as the departure day.

The playing venue and accommodation will be hosted at the 5-star Grand Bellagio Convention Hotel, providing a single location for both the games and participants’ stay. Transfers will be arranged from Batumi airport free of charge, while transport from other Georgian or nearby Turkish airports will be available on request. Teams must confirm their participation by 10 August 2025, the registration deadline.

Prizes will include trophies for the top three teams in both sections, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to every player, reserve, and captain on those teams. In addition, there will be board prizes for the best individual performances on each board across the event. The European Team Chess Championship remains one of the most prestigious competitions on the continent, and the most important team event in non-Olympic years, gathering many of the world’s elite grandmasters representing their national federations.
