Evgeny Tomashevsky completes the Tata Steel Masters field

Evgeny TomashevskyEvgeny Tomashevsky (28) from Russia will be the 14th grandmaster in the Tata Steel Masters, thus completing the top group of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2016.

Twelve of the world’s Top 30 players will participate in the Tata Steel Masters. With three players rising chess nation China is most strongly represented. The Netherlands, Russia and the Unites States follow suit with two grandmasters each.

Tomashevsky ended up being the highest ranking player with a rating below 2750 in the ACP Tournament today, thus scooping up the last remaining spot in Wijk aan Zee.

The 78th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament takes place from 15 – 31 January 2016.

Jeroen van den Berg, tournament director of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament: “Tomashevsky has had an excellent year. He has managed to win the Russian championship and was part of the Russian team that gave a strong performance winning the European country title in Reykjavik at the end of November. Tomashevsky is a welcome addition to our tournament.”

Among colleagues the Russian champion is known as ‘the professor’, for his eloquence, sympathetic personality and broad knowledge.
