After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations, but alluding to possible cheating case. Fabiano Caruana was one of the first to comment the Carlsen – Niemann cheating allegations scandal with the famous quote Can’t wait to hear more about the Hans effect on The Magnus Effect. Now Caruana gave an extensive interview on the topic for the C-Squared Podcast. He shares the opinion that Kasparov voiced earlier during the event, and stated, “It is unprecedented that the World Champion or any player at the top level withdraws from a tournament and doesn’t give a clear reason.” Caruana continued, “Obviously the biggest theory is that [Carlsen] left because he was worried that Hans Niemann cheated,” but clarified, “I do not think Hans Niemann cheated in this tournament, I feel very strongly that he didn’t.“
