Daniel Naroditsky, the acclaimed American chess grandmaster, author, streamer, and beloved commentator affectionately known as “Danya,” tragically passed away. The sad and shocking news overwhelmed the chess world and left the community in dismay and shock.
Daniel Naroditsky was not only a great player, but a fantastic streamer and educator, a true ambassador of the chess game. One of the frequents tributes on social media today reads, “I started playing chess because of Daniel Naroditsky”
Danya was close to many streamers in the chess world and they are some of the hardest hit by his passing away.
GothamChess, “I’ve been sitting here numb for the past hour staring at this news. The world lost a brilliant man today. May his memory live on forever and may we always cherish his contributions to our beautiful game.”
Anna Cramling, “I am at a loss of words. What an incredible human being he was. Rest in peace Danya.”
Nemo Zhou, “Devastated and heartbroken. Danya was one of the kindest, thoughtful, and incredible people I ever met and I’m so lucky to have gotten to work with and learn from him over the years. He truly made the world a better place and will be missed more than words can express. My prayers are with the Naroditsky family. His absence will be irreplaceable in the chess community.” She continues, “Danya was not only a genius chess player, but a gifted content creator, and commentator and coach. He always shared my love for speed chess and was someone I’ve looked up to as long as I can remember despite being the same age and being blessed enough to call him a friend. Since I quit competitive chess years ago Danya was one of the only people in the world I could handle receiving coaching from. He just had this way about him that made everything seem fine no matter how much I was struggling. I really still can’t even believe it. I’m going to miss him so much.”
Alexandra Botez, “I’ve been quiet because I didn’t know how to put this into words. I heard the news about Danya early yesterday morning, and I still can’t believe he’s gone. I’ve known Danya since we were kids. We became real friends in college, and over the years I had the privilege of working with him countless times. Everyone knew him as brilliant, humble, and exceptionally talented, but what stood out most to me was how deeply kind and selfless he was. One memory that’s stuck with me: we were studying for a history exam together. He didn’t need to be there, he could’ve aced it without trying, but he stayed to help me anyway. At one point, he left his Facebook open and I thought it’d be funny to post a joke status that he was quitting chess (stupid, I know). The joke spread and upset a lot of people. He never told me. I only learned years later from someone else how much chaos it caused. He’d kept it to himself so he wouldn’t make me feel bad. That was Danya. Always putting others first, never needing credit for it. The world, not just the chess world, lost a rare kind of light. Danya probably never fully grasped how much he positively impacted people, but I hope his legacy reminds us of it. My deepest condolences to his loved ones. I cannot imagine the pain you are feeling right now. RIP friend. If heaven exists, I know you’re there”
Agadmator, “Unimaginable tragedy. A great person, chess player and chess history connoisseur. I could listen do Danya for hours just effortlessly bending the English language to his will – as a fellow content creator, I admired it greatly. R.I.P.”
MrDodgy, “horribly sad news about Naroditsky. There are few people in the chess world that are so universally beloved. And i hope, deep down, he knew that I didn’t know him well and my interactions with him were brief – but they were the same as everyone else’s, just a genuinely nice guy”
Andrew Tang, “Devastating. It’s still hard to process that this has happened. Over the last year, I’ve been lucky to get to know Danya better — He truly was one of the wittiest, kindest, and most genuine people I knew. Rest in peace.”
Eric Rosen, “This is absolutely devastating. Danya was an amazing friend and role model not only for myself, but for so many in the chess community. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. You’ll be dearly missed, Danya. Rest in peace.”
Hannah Sayce, Still can’t believe this is real. Danya was endlessly kind, thoughtful, and selfless. I will never forget how he looked out for me in times where he didn’t need to. He was a teacher and inspiration to so many. He will be forever appreciated and remembered.
Lile Koridze, “I never met GM Daniel Naroditsky in real life, but he was always kind to me. He raided my Twitch channel, even donated, and spoke about my chess with real respect. We played many games — I barely managed to win one. A brilliant player and a genuinely good person. RIP”
Anna-Maja Kazarian, “Heartbroken and speechless. He was such a kind soul and such an inspiration. My deepest condolences to his family […]” Daniel Naroditsky was such a kind soul. He was a gifted chess player, commentator, coach, streamer. An inspiration for all of us. I had the pleasure of working with him several times as a co-commentator when I was just starting out. I looked up to him so much. At first I was super nervous, but he always treated me with utmost respect and complimented my work whenever he could. RIP Danya, you will be missed very much.
Julesgambit, “My condolences, heartbreaking”
Nemo Zhou, “Still just doesn’t feel real. He was such an incredible person who brought kindness and joy everywhere he went. The chess world will never be as bright without you Danya”
Alessia Santeramo “RIP Danya. It’s hard to express how tragic this loss feels. Danya was a rare gem in this world, an amazing teacher, a top player, and a passionate commentator. This is so sad. I hope that the chess world will cherish his memory as a reminder to leave something good as he did.”
