Giri and Abdusattorov in the co-lead at Tata Steel Masters 2023

The fourth round of the Tata Steel Masters 2023 was played today in Wijk aan Zee and the players will tomorrow have a free day. The fifth round will be played On Tour in Amsterdam, with the sixth round coming back to the Wijk aan Zee venue.

All eyes today were on the game between Anish Giri and Magnus Carlsen. Giri reached the position with clear advantage after Carlsen’s inaccurate 22…Nd4, and the situation got even worse for the World Champion after 23…Rd7. The Dutch No 1 was precise and won the game after 35 moves. It was Giri’s first victory against Magnus Carlsen ever since 2011 Tata Steel Chess.

The World No 2 Ding Liren also suffered a loss today. Indian chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa managed to prevail with black pieces in the very exciting endgame which seemed to have the potential to finish in a draw.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov was victorious against Parham Maghsoodloo after delivering a beautiful mate in the Queens + Rooks endgame.

All the other games finished in draw, and after four played rounds Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Anish Giri lead the event with 3 points. Praggnanandhaa and Fabiano Caruana follow scoring 2.5 points, each.
