GM Alex Lenderman Wins Atlantic Open

The 45th Annual Atlantic Open was held from August 23-25, 2013, at the Washington Westin Hotel, 1400 M St NW at Thomas Circle, Washington, DC.

GM Alex Lenderman comfortably took the Atlantic Open title, winning the Open Section with an undefeated 4½/5 score. Lenderman won his first four games to take the driving seat and then sealed the victory with a draw in the last round against Ryan Goldenberg.

Lenderman collected $2,100 for his weekend’s efforts. Goldenberg finished in a tie for 2nd-3rd with Andrew Samuelson, both finishing just half point behind the leader with 4/5.

Three teams tied for 1st in the Mixed Doubles, an event which combines male/female 2-player “teams” from any section with an average team rating of under 2200. The winning teams were Jennifer Yu/Paolo del Mundo, Kate Brunotts/Taylor Brunotts and Charlie Reeder/Matthew Misko who all finished with 6½ points and collected $466.67.

Yet another additional prize was the Senior Prizes, bonus prizes given to the top finishing seniors irrespective of which section they played in. Fridkin Aronov finished as the highest scoring senior in the event, winning an additional $800 to go with his victory in the Under 1000 Section.

The 2nd place senior prize went to Paul Yavari who score 4/5 in the Under 2100 Section with 3rd place shared by Larry Kaufman (Open), Terry Coffee (Under 1900), Dennis Burke (Under 1700) and Viktor Ozherelyev (Under 1500) who each scored 3½/5 in their respective sections.
