GM Axel Rombaldoni is new Italian Chess Champion

The 74th Italian Chess Championship was held from 23rd November to 4th December at the Hotel “Villa Rota Resort”, Via Annunziatella, Boscotrecase NA.

The Championship was a round robin event with 12 players and average elo 2460. The prize fund was 14,300 EUR, of which 3000 EUR was reserved for the winner.

Grandmaster Axel Rombaldoni emerged the new national champion after winning six games, drawing four and losing only to his brother Denis Rombaldoni. With a total of 8,0/11 points Rombaldoni left the last year champion Danyyil Dvirnyy half a point behind.

GM Alberto David (champion in 2012) finished third after the rapid tie-break with Sabino Brunello and Denis Rombaldoni, thus directly qualifying for the 2015 Italian Chess Championship.

Nicola Altini and Artem Gilevych have earned International Master norms.
