GM Tamaz Gelashvili tops the Continental Open 2013

The 43rd Annual Continental Open was held from August 8-11, 2013, Host Hotel at Cedar Lake, 366 Main St (Rt 20 West), Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

The event was played over 5 sections: Open, Under 2200, Under 1900, Under 1600 and Under 1300. The tournament format was 6-round Swiss.

The Open section had 28 participants. Grandmaster Tamaz Gelashvili claimed the winner’s trophy and top prize by concluding the event with 5,0/6 points.

1. GM Tamaz Gelashvili 2699 NY – 5,0 (1st, $2560.00)
2-3. IM Marc Esserman 2569 MA and Deepak Aaron 2377 NY – 4,5 (2nd-3rd, $960.00)
4-5. GM Alexander Ivanov 2624 MA and Denys Konstantin Shmelov 2465 MA – 4,0 (4th-5th, 400.00)

The projected prize fund was $30,000 based on 250 entries, with $24,000 minimum guaranteed.

Earlier this year Sturbridge hosted the 22nd Annual Eastern Class Championships.
