The 128th MGU Open 2014 took place on 6-7th December, 2014, at Chess Club MGU, in Sofia, capital and largest city of Bulgaria.
The event was organized in honor of Captain Petko Voyvoda (born 6th December 1844) and Nikola Vaptsarov (born 7th December 1909), in a 6-round Swiss format, open to all players rated below 2200. More information here
Goran Krastev tied for the firs place with the top seeded player IM Petar Orev on 5/6 points each. However the young player from Chess Club “CSKA” prevailed on a superior tie-break score and lifted the trophy. Goran took the first prize and gained 31 Elo points.
The sensation of the tournament was 11-year-old WCM Gergana Peycheva, European School Chess champion for girls U11 from Kavala 2014. She continues her string of amazing performance, finishing third with 4.5/6 points and adding 16 new Elo points to her rating.
