World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen today published the official statement on the recent “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy and accused Hans Niemann of cheating more than the 19-year-old American admitted publicly. He added that he believes “chess organizers and all those who care about the sanctity of the game we love should seriously consider increasing security measures and methods of cheat detection for over the board chess“, causing a reaction by Sinquefield Cup Chief Arbiter Chris Bird. Hikaru Nakamura was one of the first to react on Carlsen’s official statement saying that it seems that Carlsen thinks Hans was cheating in the game they played at the Sinquefield Cup despite what was said by the organizers, chief arbiter, and Kenneth Regan.
The question has been raised, what is going to happen now? As David Howell has put it, is this the end, the beginning of the end, or only the end of the beginning?
