Jamaican Chess Champions 2022 crowned in Kingston

The 2022 Open and Women National Chess Championships of Jamaica took place from 7-15 May in Kingston. 12 players in the Open section and 8 players in the Women’s section battled it out to clinch the title of National Champions.

After 11 round robin rounds played in the Open tournament, three times Jamaican Champion FM Shreyas Smith defended the title and added the fourth National trophy to his collection. He scored 9/11 points to be a full point ahead of the runner-up Jaden Shaw who won silver. Jhustice-Dimonte Mcdonald and CM Malik Curriah tied for the third place with 7 points, but bronze eventually came to Mcdonald thanks to the better tiebreak criteria.

15-year-old Gabriella Watson convincingly won the Women’s Championship scoring the outstanding 7/7 points. Nickaylah Curwin was second with 5.5 points and Kaia Gayle came third with 4 points and better tiebreaks than Suraiya Matandara-Clarke who had the same score but ended up fourth.
