42 players from 9 African countries competed in the Open’s event, while the Women’s event gathered 19 players coming from 4 countries. Both tournaments were played in 9 rounds, swiss system, with a total prize fund of 5.500$ and two qualification spots for the upcoming 5th Sharjah Chess Masters or 2nd Sharjah Chess Challengers (depending on the FIDE classical rating of the Winners of each section).

Two Ethiopian candidate masters Desalegn Fekadu Jimma and Aydagnuhem Gezachew Abera tied for the first place scoring 7.5/9 points but better tiebreaks crowned Jimma as the 2022 FIDE 4.4 Zonal Champion.

Recent Kenya’s Qualification events for the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 apparently kept in shape WFM Sasha Mongeli. She scored an impressive 9/9 points leaving no doubts about who will clinch the FIDE 4.4 Zonal Women’s Championship. Lidet Abate Haile was the first runner-up with score of 7.5/9 points.
