Johann Hjartarson is champion of Iceland

The 2016 Icelandic Chess Championship was held from 31st May to 11th June at the Tónlistarskóli in Seltjarnarness.

Twelve players with the average elo 2403 competed in the round robin tournament.

Former World Championship candidate GM Johann Hjartarson finished clear first with 8,5/11 points to claim his 6th title of national champion. Previously he won in 1980 (aged 17), 1984, 1994, 1995 and 1997.

Seltjarnarness is the smallest municipality on Iceland – only 2 km2 but the population is about 4.500. The city was the main sponsor of the tournament and the mayor, Ásgerður Halldórsdóttir, played the honorary first move.
