The seventh round of the US Chess Championship 2022 saw one of the quickest and shortest games in the history of the US Championship. Leinier Dominguez defeated Elshan Moradiabadi after only 10 moves of play. The game lasted only 20 minutes as Moradiabadi missed the well-known theoretical trick in the Petroff line and got into the losing position after only 8 played moves.
Dominguez joined the live studio of the US Chess Championship afterwards, explaining that he tried to surprise Elshan with 8.c4 move: “Very unusual [game] of course. I think I haven’t won a game like this in 20 years or something. This is of course a well known trick in this line. Elshan doesn’t play the Petroff usually, so I figured that he prepared something with 8.Re1 or 8.Nbd2 instead of 8.c4, so I was trying to pick a different line“. See the complete interview below:
