Loek van Wely grabbed clear first place at Sydney

Dutch GM Loek van Wely grabbed the winner’s trophy at the Sydney International Open 2013 which took place on 2nd – 7th April at the Parramatta Town Hall in the Australian city.

Van Wely obtained 7.5/9 points to edge Doeberl Cup winner Li Chao by half a point. Hungarian GM Attila Czebe and Czech GM Jiri Stocek both got 6.5 points, but Czebe finished third on tiebreaks.

Arif Hassani won the Challengers event with the same 7.5 score obtained by van Wely.

The event is one of the biggest chess tournaments in Australia. It attracts beginners to grandmasters from all parts of Australia and from several other countries around the world.
