Nepomniachtchi is on the verge of entering the 2800 club, reaches his highest ever ELO

Ian Nepomniachtchi is on the verge of entering the 2800 ELO club. After his victory in round 2 of the World Chess Championship Nepo’s rating is 2799,8, just 0,2 points shy of the 2800 mark. So far only 15 players have been able to achieve this – Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, Veselin Topalov, Sakhriyar Mamedyarov, Wesley So, Viswanathan Anand, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Hikaru Nakamura, Vladimir Kramnik, Ding Liren, Alexander Grischuk, Alireza Firouzja, and Anish Giri. Only a handful of them have been World Champions – Kasparov, Topalov, Kramnik, Anand, and Carlsen.

The previous personal best for Nepomniachtchi was 2995 ELO during the Candidates in Madrid, which he won with a round to go. Now Nepomniachtchi has the chance to become the 16th player to cross the 2800 ELO mark.
