Gedeon Barcza Memorial finished after only one round

Letter from Grandmaster Eduardas Rozentalis

Our good friend Grandmaster Eduardas Rozentalis from Lithuania informed us that a very strong round robin tournament, dedicated to the memory of late GM Gedeon Barcza, was abruptly canceled after the first round was played.
Bellow is his original message:

“Unfortunately, the 1 round of the II Gedeon Barcza Memorial in Budapest became also the last one.
The organizer Gabor Pali didn’t have any money to pay Ramada Resort Hotel (where the tournament has started) and also to the players. After two days of hospitality and patience, the managers of Ramada having received not a penny from Mr.Pali, refused to believe further promises and lies, and the tournament was canceled.
Even after that, Gabor Pali lied the players, that he was going to pay all the expenses in 5 minutes, then in half an hour, then tomorrow morning …
Yesterday (08.04.09) the players had to rebook their flights at their cost and left Budapest.

Best regards,
Grandmaster Eduardas Rozentalis (Lithuania)”
