GM Evgenij Agrest, GM Borko Lajthajm, and GM Mateo Ramon share second

Acropolis Georgiev

The rapid tournament Memorial Vicente Sebastian took place 27-28 June, 2009, in Fornells, Menorca (Spain). It was a 8 round swiss tournament with the participation of many top grandmasters, including GM Vallejo, GM Georgiev, GM Ramon, GM Agrest, etc.

The competition started well for all the top seeded players and up to round 4 they were moving in a pack with perfect score at the top of the table. Movements started afterwards, with the direct matches at the top boards. GM Vallejo Pons made three draws in a row, and with a last round loss against GM Ramon, he could not make it to the top positions. The first position was taken by GM Georgiev (holder of a Guiness Chess World Record), who managed to allow only 2 draws and defeated the surprising untitled leader Cubas Pons in the last round. The second place was shared by GM Evgenij Agrest, GM Borko Lajthajm, and GM Mateo Ramon, who had a very stable performance in the second part of the competition.

The tournament attracted many participants as it hadno entrance fee and featured a nice prize fund of over 6000 eur.
