Raising awareness through chess

Janet Newton and Shira Evans friendly match

Starting this Saturday over the USA’s “Labor Day” weekend Janet Newton from Goddesschess is playing a chess “match” against Shira Evans. The match has a charity cause and will help Shira’s foundation Computer labs for Kids, which is a charity that provides needy children around the world with laptops and computer-like equipment (such as a Leapster) and also provides training on how to use the equipment.

“I am no chessplayer! I do not have a rating and have never played a clock-timed game in my life,” commented Jane Newton. “But Shira and I thought this might be a way to raise awareness for her Foundation. We will be playing at chess.com. My “handle” there is JanXena and Shira’s “handle” is “shirae.” Games will be on September 5, 6 and 7 starting at 10:00 a.m. each day CST (Wisconsin, USA time). Time control is one hour each, with no increment.”

Jan, playing as JanXena, and Shira playing as shirae, will go en garde with their Queens September 5 – 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. CST (Wisconsin time) each day (time controls 1 hour each, no increment), to raise awareness of the great work Computer Labs for Kids is doing around the world for disadvantaged children.

JanXena has been training hard with assistance from her coach, Kelly Atkins, with analysis donated by and a two-hour intensive over-the-telephone and internet training session courtesy of Dan and Laura Sherman of Your Chess Coach.
