Ukraine wins Chess Olympiad 2010 (updated)

Silver medal for Russia, bronze for Israel

Ivanchuk

Ivanchuk
the hero for Ukraine

The national men team of Ukraine became gold medalist of the 39 th World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk. Ivanchuk, Ponomariov, Eljanov, Efimenko, and Moiseenko won the gold medal in the open section.

Ukraine took the early lead with two consecutive 4:0 victories against Iraq and Scotland. The surprise of the first half, Croatia, stopped them for a draw in round 3. At that time surfaced the winning spirit of Ivanchuk, who brought the team victories against Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Hungary, and Georgia. A draw in the critical match with Russia in round 8 and victories against Azerbaijan and France stabilized Ukraine on top of the table. A final draw against Israel was enough for the gold medal.

Second place is for Russia, who were the rating favorites of the competition. A wrong step against Hungary and the draw with Ukraine complicated things for the Russians. A final draw with the inspired team of Spain left them with the silver medal.

Third on tiebreak is Israel. They finished with the same points as Hungary, but with a better tiebreak.
