Budva to bid for 2009 European Individual Chess Championship

Positive reply expected by the end of this month

Representatives of Montenegro Chess Federation and City of Budva have agreed to submit a bid for organization of the 2009 European Individual Chess Championship. The documents will be sent by February 15th and European Chess Union (ECU) decision is expected by the end of this month.

European Individual Chess Championship should take place on March or April of 2009, and this could be the strongest tournament ever held in Montenegro with over 200 Grandmasters expected to take participation. City of Budva will guarantee rich prize fund, hoping to boost chess interest in Montenegro as well as achieving positive effect for local tourism.

Budva is medieval city and touristic resort located on the Adriatic Sea. Unlike the big continental cities, Göteborg and Dresden first to come on mind, Budva has complete infrastructure and experienced chess organizers to host massive events. The city was already venue of European Youth Championships and Zonal tournaments.

Montenegro chess officers will probably draw important conclusions from earlier championships and provide better live games transmission than Dresden 2007 and be more transparent than Plovdiv 2008.
