Cuba with five new chess grandmasters

Fidel Corrales, Yuri González, Isam Ortiz, Luis Manuel Pérez and Yaniet Marrero

Five Cuban chess players were promoted to Grand Masters after the recently-held congress of the International Chess Federation.

The congress promoted Fidel Corrales, Yuri González, Isam Ortiz, Luis Manuel Pérez and Yaniet Marrero to that category.

That way, five female players and 18 male players are Grand Masters in Cuba.

The Caribbean island is expected to participate in the World Cup by Team, scheduled for an undetermined date next year in Turkey.

Ten teams will compete in that event, including the three male teams that won medals at the Olympics, the champion of the female tournament, a guest, the host country’s champion and four continental champions.

Cuba’s opportunity to participate in the Cup lies in the fact that the United States was the Olympic bronze medalist and the Caribbean island finished second in the Americas.
