GM Wang Hao is leading Reykjavik Open

results, standings, and pairings

Reykjavik Open 2008 has a new sole leader. This is the top Chinese GM Wang Hao. He managed to take down GM Fabiano Caruana, and the draws on boards 1 and 3, GM Stefansson – GM Wang Yue and GM Kveinys – GM Mikhalevski, gave Wang Hao the lead with 6,0/7. Second place is shared by Stefansson and Wang Yue, both with 5,5/7, while the major part of the chasing pack is at 5,0/7 – a total of 7 players. Among them we find the strong GM Halkias (GRE), one of the top Norway GMs Kjetil Lie, Italy’s best GM Caruana.

The Chess Grand Prix series participant GM Al-Modiahki is also with 5,0/7 after a third consecutive win, this time against GM Malisauskas. Up to now GM Al-Modiahki has 5 wins, 2 losses, and no draws, and shows true fighting spirit.

Round 8 has true derby matches. On board one the leader Wang Hao will meet his countrymate Wang Yue. Board 2 will be a fight between Mikhalevski and Stefansson, while board 3 will be Kjetil Lie – Malakhatko. Fabiano Caruana will face Hillarp Persson in an attempt to get back into the game.
