Nguyen and Citra clinch gold at Southeast Asian Games 2022

The first event of the Southeast Asian Games 2022 (standard individual tournament), concluded today in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. The event was played in two sections: Open and Women’s, from May 10-15, 2022. The Individual Rapid chess championship of the SEA Games starts tomorrow and will be played on 16-17 May, followed by the Individual Blitz championship and team rapid and blitz tournaments.

GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son from Vietnam triumphed the South Asian Standard Championship after 9 rounds in the Open swiss tournament, while WIM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra of Indonesia won gold in Women’s 10-player round-robin event.

GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son defeated FM Lye Lik Zang in the final round to score 7/9 and secure the title. IM Ervan Mohamad finished a half-point behind the champion and tied for the second place with IM Tin Jingyao. The silver medal went to Ervan Mohamad, as he defeated Tin Jingyao in the direct encounter (first tiebreak variable). (scroll down for final standings)  


WIM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra, her compatriot IM Irine Kharisma Suandar and WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram scored 7/9 each and tied for the first place in the women’s tournament. Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra deservedly claimed gold as she defeated both competitors in the direct encounters. Irine Kharisma Sukandar took silver thanks to slightly better Sonneborn-Berger (second tiebreak variable) over Hoang Thi Bao Tram, who had to settle for bronze. (scroll down for final standings)
