Oliver Gonzalez Memorial – Day Six

Report by WGM Anna Rudolf

FM David Anton and IM David Larino are leading the overall standings of the Oliver Gonzalez Memorial after Anton’s victory over GM Renier Vazquez in the 6th round of the daily group.

FM Angel Arribas, the only one who had a perfect score after the first 5 rounds, loses a promising position against IM Pablo Almagro and drops back to a shared third place with a bunch of other players, namely: IM Pablo Almagro, IM Adam Hunt, IM Alejandro Moreno, Ivan Valles, Sergio Adan, GM Ibragim Khamrakulov and GM Oleg Korneev (all of them with 5 points out of 6 games).

Now that the two groups are united (daily and weekend group) one could wonder in which group it was more “beneficial” to participate.

Well, not easy to say. FM David Anton has made it to the lead by playing a normal, one game each day schedule, while IM David Larino has scored 5.5 points in 3 days, all of them with double rounds.

From the 3rd to the 10th place we find 4 players from the daily group (Arribas, Almagro, Hunt and Khamrakulov) and 4 players from the weekend group (Moreno, Valdes, Adan and Korneev).

Will it mean an advantage to the players of the (former) weekend group that they didn’t have to play on Thursday or will the participants of the daily group overcome the weekend group players by their regular rhythm of play?
