Oliver Gonzalez Memorial – Day Two

Report by WGM Anna Rudolf

The second round of the daily (“normal”) group of the Oliver Gonzalez Memorial brought the victory of the higher rated players on most of the boards, meanwhile in the third and the fourth round of the weekend group couple of top players dropped half or even a full point.

One of these surprise victories were carried out by a talented local player, Adrian Suarez, who beat his IM opponent rated 250 higher than him.

An interesting phenomenon of the Oliver Gonzalez Memorial is the option of 3 byes for half a point each — that is, the player asks not to be paired and receives half a point. Each player has the right to ask for 3 byes, but only for the first 6 rounds.

GM Oleg Korneev, for example, asked for 2 byes for Sunday, and will continue his play in the weekend group on Wednesday (which is a holiday in Spain) with 3 points out of 4. Meanwhile, he is competing in the Bilbao Open.

GM Ibragim Khamrakulov used the option of byes for the first 2 rounds in the daily group and will start to play the tournament from Monday on (from 1 point out of 2).
