Orelvis Perez is the new champion of Catalunya

London Chess ClassicGM Orelvis Pérez took the title of 2013 Catalan Absolute champion after defeating GM Josep Manuel López by 1.5-0.5 in the final match of the competition. Pérez arrived only as the 8th seed and has now taken the trophy won last year by GM Miguel Muñoz Pantoja.

Pérez, who represents the Club d’Escacs Montcada, did not have an easy time to get the title, as he had to beat first seed GM Miguel Illescas in the quarterfinals.

Second seed GM Alvar Alonso finished third after defeating IM Lázaro Lorenzo in the deciding match.

The Campeonato Absoluto de Cataluña 2013 took place on 4th – 11th May at the Local de la Federació Catalana d’Escacs (Sant Adrià, 20 de Barcelona), Spain.

The event was a 16-players knock-out tournament.
