Paraguay makes its first step to introduce chess in schools

At the request of Congressman John A. Denis (PLRA-Central), the plenary of Deputies approved a draft declaration, “It is declared that chess is of educational and sporting interest.”

The document recognizes chess as a sport science that promotes educational values and demonstrates the scientific relationship with the development of cognitive, aesthetic and social skills. It is also proposed to urge national authorities that chess be considered as a pedagogical support in the education system by the institutions and bodies of the State.

Mr. Victor M. Oxley (adviser for Paraguay’s Parliament, Chamber of Deputies, who kindly provided us with this information) and Deputy Juan Antonio Denis are working on the bill to introduce chess as a subject in school curriculum of Paraguay.
